What are Les Nuits de Saint-Roch?
Just steps from the Louvre and the Tuileries Garden, Saint-Roch church takes on a new face once night falls. For 45 minutes, its walls, vaults and chapels come alive with video-mapping projections, carried by music. The stone of the church is revealed, as if telling its own story.
The show is produced by Amaclio, the company behind La Nuit aux Invalides.
What story does the show tell?
A young boy, Jules-Robert de Cotte, crosses paths with André Le Nôtre, Louis XIV’s gardener, whose tomb lies in the church. From this imaginary encounter comes a dialogue that travels back in time through the history of Western art, from the Romanesque period to the Grand Siècle.
The voices of Brigitte Lecordier and Bruno Choël accompany this journey. On Fridays and Saturdays, the Ensemble Sequentiæ, made up of around thirty musicians and singers, performs live, adding real depth to the show.
Why is Saint-Roch known as the “artists’ parish”?
Standing on rue Saint-Honoré, in the heart of historic Paris, the church has kept a nickname that suits it perfectly. It is the resting place of André Le Nôtre and the playwright Pierre Corneille. Visitors can also admire works of art, vaulted chapels, sculpted details and a dome painted by Adolphe Roger. The setting is already sumptuous by day, and the light gives it a second face.
