A major artistic event in Paris
Summer 2025 is set to be a vibrant one, with a major exhibition dedicated to David Hockney at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Over 400 works are brought together, tracing seven decades of creativity by an artist who has constantly pushed the boundaries of visual art. A fascinating journey into the world of a painter as emblematic as he is unclassifiable, not to be missed during your stay in Paris.
A constantly evolving body of work
Recognised as one of the leading artists of his generation, David Hockney has explored a wide variety of media and techniques throughout his career. From his early portraits in the 1950s to recent digital works created on an iPad, via oil painting, acrylics, drawing, Polaroids and charcoal, Hockney has continually reinvented himself with boldness. His view of the world, both curious and profoundly human, gives each of his creations a unique presence.
A scenography imagined by the artist
What makes this retrospective so distinctive is Hockney’s direct involvement in its design. He personally decided to begin the exhibition with his most recent work — notably those produced during his years in Normandy — before leading visitors back through the earlier stages of his creative journey. This original structure offers a vibrant reading of his artistic development, inspirations, and deep connection to his time.
Each room has been designed as an independent chapter, forming a sensitive dialogue between nature, portraiture, memory, music, and art history. The artist pays tribute to key influences, from Van Gogh to Cézanne, while asserting a bold and radical modernity unique to his artistic outlook.
An immersive and poetic experience
The Fondation’s 11 galleries host a rich and varied path through Hockney’s career, including iconic works such as A Bigger Splash and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), as well as monumental pieces like Bigger Trees near Warter. Visitors will also discover the iPad series 220 for 2020, created during the lockdown in Normandy, along with striking double portraits filled with intimacy and tenderness.
The exhibition ends with an immersive installation that blends music, projections, and scenography inspired by live performance — a nod to Hockney’s love for opera. This ambitious design turns the visit into a fully sensory experience, blurring the lines between painting, technology, and performance.
